Walker had managed a couple of hours of sleep by the time he woke up at eight a.m. Heâd tossed and turned in the car seat till about five, then fell asleep and tossed and turned some more. Mostly because of the dreams. One of them took him back to his fifteen-year-old days in the foster home. One second he and Kim were watching Jeopardy; the next he had his hands around his foster fatherâs neck. As he squeezed, his foster fatherâs face morphed into Tylerâs. Walker supposed that symbolized him having killed them both.
The next dream was of Taylor. It started off nice, but mirroring Walkerâs real life, things went sour in the end. He couldnât sit in that car a minute longer, so he got out to stretch his legs.
Walker had an hour before the bank opened. He reached back inside the car for his go bag. Inside the front pocket was his key to the safety deposit box. He walked over to the stairs and walked down. When he reached the exit door, the sun was already shining. It was a beautiful day. The traffic was already getting thick. People going to work, getting their kids to school, things that Walker knew absolutely nothing about.
What he did understand, which most of these people in their cars also understood, was that coffee was a must. He spotted a Starbucks just down the block and made his way toward it. Thatâs when his phone rang. Taylor.
âGood morning,â he answered. âYou doing okay?â
âHey, Tom. Hope I didnât wake you. I waited to call so you could get some sleep.â
âI appreciate it. Just getting some coffee now.â
âMmm. I could use a cup myself. Wish I was there with you.â
âI do too,â Walker said as he crossed the street.
âAnd Iâm okay. Tired but okay. I have some updates.â
âGreat. Go ahead.â
âI did what we talked about. I checked the camera at the gas station you mentioned. There wasnât much traffic in and out of that road, so it was pretty easy to find the van. Well, we think itâs the van. There isnât much on the owner, which makes me think he might be in your line of work.â
Walker moved up to the counter and ordered a coffee, black. âHutch,â he told the woman at the register. Then back to Taylor he said, âOkay, sounds promising.â
âWas hoping maybe youâd heard the name so you could confirm.â
âShoot.â
âTodd Castle?â Taylor said.
That was not what Walker was expecting to hear. And it didnât sit well.
âWalker?â
âIâm here.â
âI thought I lost you,â Taylor said. âDid you hear the name?â
âI heard it. And I know of himâ ââ
âOh my God, thatâs great! We know who weâre looking for!â
One of the baristas called Walkerâs alias. He walked over and picked up the coffee. âYeah, that is good.â
âYou, uh, donât seem all that excited. Everything okay?â
âWell, I probably would have wanted to hear just about any other name than Castleâs. But Iâm glad we know who to look for.â
âWhy, what is it about him?â Taylor said.
